When my travel buddy Cedric left back home, I decided to return to Pai and spend a good week there. We’ve only briefly touched upon Pai during our (unfinished) Mae Hong Son motorbike loop, and I left Pai with mixed feelings it. To be honest, my first impression of Pai was pretty terrible. But ever since I’ve been traveling SE Asia fellow travellers have been recommending me to go to Pai. “You’ll love it there!” “You’ll find yourself getting stuck there for at least 2 weeks!” So it left me wondering what I’ve missed not being that charmed of Pai at first.
I went back, went to a different guesthouse, this time by recommendation of a travel friend (Golden House, no online presence just mouth-to-mouth), hired a mountain bike for the full week and explored all of Pai and its surroundings. And I did fall in love with Pai. It was not love at first sight, but hanging around there long enough to meet many kind people and discover a couple of good organic cafés pulled me into feeling at home in Pai.
