Being Myanmar’s top attraction, the 3000 temples and pagodas of Bagan, built between the 11th and 13th century, went beyond all my expectations.
Arriving by nightbus at 4 am in the morning, we rented a bicycle at our guesthouse and cruised our way through the dark to the first temples of Bagan, 4 km’s away. Dark in Myanmar means truly dark, but I was grateful for my torch again.
Arriving at the first temple we would climb, we joined two local temple guards sitting at a wood fire to warm up a little. Around 6:00 am we climbed up to see the landscape unfold slowly before our eyes, first only its vague contours out of the dark, gradually unravelling countless and countless pagodas and temples, as far as you could see.
In three days we cruised all of Bagan by electric bike and I could have easily spent more time there. Absolute highlight of Myanmar so far!
